Join us for a First Friday reception! Enjoy a summer concert in the Seward House gardens by Dean's List and walk through an art exhibit by Sandy Shutters in our contemporary gift shop gallery space.
As always, guests are invited into the Museum to view the dining and drawing rooms, with docents on hand to answer questions and interpret the spaces. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Bring your lunch and learn some history in the Seward House Museum gardens! Throughout his career, William Seward made a name for himself defending the rights of immigrants—often in the face of fierce opposition. Kirsten Wise, Curator of the Cayuga Museum, discusses the legacy of immigration in the making of Auburn. Paying particular attention to late 19th and early 20th century trends, Wise traces how Italian immigrant communities contributed to the richness of “History’s Hometown.”

Historian Lee Farrow presents her new book, Seward's Folly: A New Look at the Alaska Purchase. Farrow’s work represents the first book-length examination of "Seward's Folly" in a generation. Blending her scholarly background in Russian history with an in-depth look at American motivations to acquire the Alaskan territories, Farrow puts the two sides together in an engaging narrative. As the world reflects on the sesquicentennial of Seward's eponymous folly, this book about its origins and legacy could not be timelier.

The fabulous and fascinating artwork of the Seward House moves from the backdrop to the foreground in this art-centric tour. Learn how aesthetics framed the world—and home—of the Seward family, as well as which artists and art movements caught their eyes.

Start your summer reading list early! A duo of historians, Douglas Egerton and Leigh Fought, both on the faculty at LeMoyne College, discuss and sign copies of their new books. Egerton's Thunder at the Gates is the recipient of the prestigious 2017 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize and chronicles the first black regiments to join the Union Army during the Civil War. Fought's Women in the World of Frederick Douglass explores the often-hidden network of relationships with women that shaped the famed abolitionist's life and career.

Fall is in the air on the Seward House Museum grounds! Join us for a crisp Garden Clean Up Day as we prepare the gardens for the changing of the seasons. Help install autumnal decorations as well as with weeding and trimming.
