In the autumn of 1838 Washington Irving visited Auburn, where he was a guest of the Seward family. The author was also a celebrity, famed for his 1820 short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” which was fast becoming a popular staple of the All Hallow’s Eve season. In that tradition, children and their parents are invited to get into the Halloween spirit with a dramatic reading of “Sleepy Hollow” by Mr. Seward’s daughter, Fanny.

The scale of death wrought by the Civil War changed the ways Americans grieved for their lost loved ones. The Victorian generation posed for photographs with the dead and kept memento mori, physical mementos from the bodies of the deceased. They also developed a culture of funereal rites that strike the modern observer as dark and morbid.

Back by popular demand! Embrace the changing of the seasons in the crisp air of an outdoor walking tour led by museum staff from the Seward House and the Cayuga Museum. The foliage and the history will both be on full display as guides take you on a winding stroll that features Auburn’s historic South Street residential district and Fort Hill Cemetery.

Join us for a First Friday reception! We will have live music by The Perennials as well as a contemporary art exhibit by Dewey Neild.

As always, guests are invited into the Museum to view the Dining and Drawing rooms, with docents on hand to answer questions and interpret the spaces. Complimentary refreshments will be provided.

This event is free and open to the public.
