Man's walking stick. Tapering mahogany shaft with a bulbous ivory head. Brass sleeve at tip. The ivory knob has a small hole drilled in the top. The knob is cracked on the sides and has two smaller cracks in the top. A brass or gold band under the knob is engraved "Carved from the hand Railing of the Old Dept. of State/Wm. H. Seward.

State Department Cane

A gift to William Henry Seward when he was Secretary of State from a Mr. Cox.  This cane, on display in the Diplomat Gallery, was a gift to William Henry Seward when he was Secretary of State from a Mr. Cox. It is made of mahogany with a highly polished marble handle and a brass band with an inscription that reads “Carved from the handrail of the old State Dept. for Wm. H. Seward.”
